It was a disappointing start for the Indian contingent on day one of athletics events at the Tokyo Olympics. Avinash Sable, MP Jabir, Dutee Chand, and the mixed relay team were all knocked out from the heats.

Avinash Sable did set a new national record and was also a bit unlucky as he finished 13th fastest overall but was knocked out because of the level of competition in heat 2.

That's all from the opening day of the athletics.

Thank you very much for joining in and I hope you get a good night's sleep before the start of our coverage tomorrow.

Elaine Thompson-Herah and Marie-Josee Ta Lou make headlines

Elaine Thompson-Herah and Marie-Josee Ta Lou set the tone in the morning session as they finished with a time of 10.82s and 10.78s. While Jamaican icon Shelly-Ann Fraser-Price wasn't far behind and she herself set a time of 10.84s. The Jamaican would be wary of the threat from the two athletes and would be looking to improve in the semifinals.

In the 3000m men's Steeplechase event,  Lamecha Girma was on the top of the rankings followed by Ryuji Miura in the second at the end of the heats.

Benjamin Kigen and Abraham Kibiwot from Nigeria finished third and fourth respectively.

All three Indian athletes go out in the first round

While Avinash Sable set a new national record in the 3000m Steeplechase, the 26-year-old was unlucky as he was the 13th fastest and would've finished top if he was placed in heat 3. The performance of Avinash Sable will be a major positive as he was competing in his first Olympic Games.

However, the same cannot be said for MP Jabir and Dutee Chand as they didn't even achieve their personal best. MP Jabir finished last in his heat, while Dutee Chand finished seventh.
