The 39th National Junior Athletics Championships, scheduled to be held in Bhubaneswar, Odisha from October 25-29, has been postponed as the state braces for an impending cyclone, Dana, the Athletics Federation of India (AFI) said on Tuesday.

"The 39th National Junior Athletics Championships postponed due to (impending) cyclone in Odisha. The next date will be published soon," the AFI said in a statement.

The five-day Championships was to be held at the Kalinga Stadium.

A low pressure has developed in the Bay of Bengal. It is currently rolling towards the eastern coast, with the cyclone making landfall between the Odisha-Bengal coastline between Thursday night and Friday morning, unleashing a peak wind speed of 120km an hour.

The cloud, being carried by the system, will also bring heavy rain to the coastal areas.

As per the forecast of the India Meteorological Department (IMD) Director General Mrutunjay Mohapatra, Odisha will bear the brunt of the impending cyclone.

“The depression over east-central Bay of Bengal has intensified into a deep depression and lay centred about 690 km southwest of Paradip, 740 km southsoutheast of Sagar Island and 710 km south-southeast of Khepupara in Bangladesh by 5.30 pm on Tuesday,” the latest IMD bulletin read.
