In an exciting move for athletics enthusiasts, the Athletics Federation of India (AFI) is in the process of creating an invitational Javelin Throw tournament for top Javelin athletes across the globe.

Outgoing AFI president Adille Sumariwalla confirmed the development in a press conference during the General Assembly Meeting of the body.

Talking about the development, Adille said, "Looking at the popularity of javelin, we are in discussions of creating an invitational tournament to get all the top throwers to the country with Neeraj Chopra headlining the event."

"After Neeraj's medal in Tokyo, India has seen a surge in the popularity of the Javelin Throw and we have a National Javelin Day on 7th August. So, the tournament will capitalize on that," Adille added further.

The tournament will feature the top ten throwers from the world and it will be a treat for Indian fans.

"Neeraj Chopra will be there. He is part of the team that is organizing the event, along with JSW, a foreign firm, and the AFI are together creating this competition.," Adille added.

The tournament will be hosted sometime later in the year around September.

India has also expressed interest in hosting the 2029 World Championships, as well as the 2027 World Relays. The AFI has already submitted its expression of interest to host the 2028 World Junior Championships.

India is hosting a World Athletics Continental Tour bronze-level event in Bhubaneswar on August 10. This will be the first global athletics meet to be hosted by India after the international permit meets, held in the country in the late 1980s and early 1990s.
