Elite Indian athletes began their quest for the 2026 Asian Games quotas on the first day of the Inter-State Athletics Championships in Bhubaneswar, Odisha, on Tuesday.
National record holder Jyothi Yarraji, returning from a long injury break, was the star attraction of the day as she started her 2026 season at the Kalinga Stadium.
On the other hand, Dev Meena, Kuldeep Kumar and G Reegan were fighting hard for the Asian Games quota in the intense men's pole vault final.

Jyothi Yarraji wins the women's 100m title with a sub-13s time in the final
She is the first Indian to dip under 13 seconds this year, clocking 12.99s to win the title ahead of Nandhini K, who registered a new personal best of 13.22s.
Both athletes qualified for the Asian Games, breaching the qualifying mark of 13.34s.

Another massive National Record for India in Women's Hammer Throw
Anushka Yadav attained a distance of 67.02m on her final attempt to breach the record and also qualify for the Asian Games.
The 18-year-old bettered a nine-year-old national record held by Sarita Singh at 65.25m. She first recorded a distance of 65.64m in the first half, before throwing even further to 67.02m

New National record for Dev Meena in Men's Pole Vault
He cleared the 5.46m mark on his third attempt to better his own record of 5.45m and also breached the Asian Games qualification.

She attained the distance of 62.07m on her first attempt to breach the qualifying mark of 61.72m.

I. Asha Ilango starts with a massive personal best of 13.67m in women's triple jump
She took the lead in her first very attempt and also breached the Asian Games mark of 13.34m.
This is the best jump of the year for any Indian female triple jumper; she also matched Anju Bobby George to become the joint 4th best triple jumper ever from India.
