A PTI report yesterday reported that Hima Das will apparently not be participating in the IAAF Continental Cup after a "hectic season" which saw the sprinter push the boundaries and constantly better her own time. Her coaches have ruled out concerns of injury though even though earlier reports seemed to suggest that she had sustained one during the recent Asian Games. Hima was initially among seven Indian athletes who were to take part in the prestigious tournament in Ostrava starting today. She would have been a part of the Asia Pacific team. She has now been replaced by Australia’s Anneliese Rubbie as the second runner from Asia-Pacific. Yes, Hima is not running in the IAAF Continental Cup. The AFI has decided to give her rest. She has run so many races this year from the Commonwealth Games to the World Juniors and the Asian Games. It is not good to make her run so many races,” a top coach was quoted as saying by PTI. “There is no injury to Hima. Athletes need good recovery time after a hectic season. She is very young, she has just started her career and we have to preserve and manage her workload lest she is burnt out,” the coach said. There had been reports that Hima had suffered strains during the 4x400m Relay race at the Asian Games after being reportedly "obstructed" by a Bahraini runner. The Athletics Federation of India had taken up the matter the legal way but they were denied having a case and no action was taken. The other Indians who are taking part in the tournament representing Asia Pacific are Arpinder Singh (men’s triple jump), Neeraj Chopra (men’s javelin), Sudha Singh (women’s 3000m steeplechase)Mohd. Anas (men’s 400m), Jinson Johnson (men’s 800m) and P U Chitra (women’s 1500m). How much Hima Das' absence affects the team's performance remains to be seen.
