Star athlete Hima Das will be appointed as Deputy Superintendent of Assam police, it was announced by Assam’s finance minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma at the assembly on Friday.

In a welcoming move the Assam government also said that Asian Games and Olympic Medal Winners from Assam will be offered ACS or APS Ranks.

In his budget speech, Dr. Sarma was quoted saying, “Those sports persons from Assam who have won gold medals in Olympic, Asian Games and Commonwealth Games will be appointed as the grade one officer of the Assam Government.”

“We are happy to announce that ‘Dhing Express’ Hima Das will be the first beneficiary of this initiative. She will be offered the post of DSP,” Sarma added.

A week back Hima had a stadium named after her in Rajasthan, she even posted about it on Twitter.

Hima, 20, broke into the scene a couple of years back. She became the first Indian athlete to win a gold medal in a track event at the IAAF World U20 Championships. The Assam girl also holds the current Indian national record in 400 metres with a timing of 50.79 s that she clocked at the 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta, Indonesia. Currently, she is making a comeback from injury.

Dr. Sarma expressed that he hoped that the initiative would be helpful in promoting sporting spirit among the young people of the state.

It was further stated that a sum of Rs 1000 Crore will be allocated for 'Swami Vivekananda Youth Empowerment Yojana' which is expected to enable the youth to actively engage in various economic activities without leaving their native places.
