India's long-distance runner Gulveer Singh, has broken his own men's 5,000m national record to clinch the gold medal at the Yogibo Athletics Challenge Cup in Japan on Saturday.
He bettered his previous record (13:18.92s) by a good seven seconds and clocked 13:11.82 to win this World Athletics Bronze Level meet in Niigata, Japan.
This was the sixth track meet of the year for Gulveer in the 5,000m and it was the third time that he clocked a timing of sub 13:30 minutes.
The victory at this meet will help Gulveer Singh gain crucial ranking points and keeps him in the hunt for qualification to the World Championships next year which has an entry standard of 13:01.00.
Mebuki Suzuki (13:13.80) and Kotaro Shinohara (13:15.70) of Japan finished in the second and third position in the final of 5000m respectively.
Gulveer, who failed to qualify for the Paris Olympics earlier this year, will try to build on this run and further improve his timings before the start of the next cycle of the Olympics.
Gulveer is also the national record holder for India in 10,000m with a timing of 27:41.81, which he clocked earlier this year in The TEN competition in California.
