Commonwealth Games 2026: Who is Dinesh Kumar?

Dinesh Kumar is one of India's most accomplished lawn bowlers and has established himself as an experienced player in the sport. His biggest career achievement came at the 2022 Commonwealth Games, where he won a silver medal in the men's fours event alongside Sunil Bahadur, Chandan Kumar Singh and Navneet Singh. The Indian team finished runners-up to Northern Ireland in the final.

The silver medal was India's first-ever Commonwealth Games medal in men's lawn bowls and played a significant role in bringing the sport in focus.

Early Life

Hailing from Jharkhand, Dinesh Kumar serves in the Jharkhand Police, balancing his sporting career with his professional life. Born on June 16, 1977, he took up lawn bowls as the sport began to emerge in the state after its introduction in 2006.

He is associated with the Bowling Federation of India.

On his national championship debut in 2008, he won a gold medal at the National Lawn Bowls Championships.

Dinesh has represented India at three Commonwealth Games. He competed in the triples event in 2010, the pairs and fours events in 2014, and the triples and fours events in 2018. In 2014, the Indian team topped its section but lost the bronze medal match to Australia. At the next edition, they finished on top of Section B before losing to Wales in the quarter-finals.

Rise through the ranks

Dinesh Kumar qualified for the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow after winning the gold medal at the 2026 Asian Lawn Bowls Championships in New Delhi.

He clinched gold in the men's pairs event with Navneet Singh at the 2026 Senior Asian Lawn Bowls Championships in New Delhi. Secured silver in the men's singles at the 2025 Bowls World Cup in Kuala Lumpur. He also won bronze in the men's fours at the 2023 Asian Lawn Bowls Championships, bronze in the men's triples at the 2019 Asia Pacific Bowls Championship in Queensland, and gold in the men's triples at the 2017 Asian Lawn Bowls Championships.

Eyes on Glasgow

At the ongoing Glasgow Commonwealth Games 2026, Dinesh Kumar is competing in the men's pairs event alongside Navneet Singh. The duo had earlier teamed up in the men's fours event at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, where they won the historic silver medal.

Competing in Section B alongside England, Namibia, the Falkland Islands, the Cook Islands and Botswana, the Indian team has won all three of their sectional matches so far. On Friday, Dinesh Kumar and Navneet Singh secured a 2-0 victory over the Falkland Islands and will next face England’s Nick Brett and Jamie Walker in Section B.
