Indian athletics witnessed one of its most dramatic moments on the track as the men’s 100m national record was broken twice within minutes at the Federation Cup.
Gurindervir Singh initially sent shockwaves through the competition after clocking 10.17 seconds to set a new national record in the men’s 100m event. His run briefly established him as the fastest Indian ever over the distance and marked a major milestone for Indian sprinting.
However, the celebrations were short-lived.
Just minutes later, Animesh Kujur produced an even faster performance, storming to a sensational 10.15-second finish to erase Gurindervir’s newly created mark and reclaim the national record.
Animesh’s run also helped him attain the qualification standard for the upcoming Commonwealth Games, adding further significance to the performance.
The back-to-back record-breaking runs turned the Federation Cup into a historic evening for Indian athletics, with the national record changing hands twice in the span of a single session.
The much-anticipated men’s 100m final is scheduled for 7:10 pm on Saturday, with all eyes now on another potential showdown between the country’s two fastest sprinters.
The Federation Cup also witnessed an impressive performance in the women’s long jump, where Ancy Sojan registered a new personal best of 6.75m.
The mark brought her closer to the Commonwealth Games qualification standard of 6.84m. She now needs to better the national record of 6.83m to achieve the qualifying mark.
