India's history at Asian Games – From 1951 to 2022

India has been a constant presence at the Asian Games since the continental multi-sport event began in 1951 with New Delhi as the host.

The country is one of seven nations to have competed at every Summer Asian Games and has won at least one gold medal at every edition.

From the early success of the 1951 Games to the record-breaking haul at Hangzhou 2022, held in 2023, India's Asian Games medal record has evolved significantly.

With Aichi-Nagoya 2026 approaching, here is a look at India's medal history, best finishes and strongest sports.

India's best Asian Games finishes

India's best-ever rank at the Asian Games came at the inaugural New Delhi edition in 1951, when the hosts finished second with 51 medals.

India finished third at Jakarta 1962, winning 10 gold, 13 silver and 10 bronze medals. That remained India's last podium finish in the overall medal table until Hangzhou.

The country's best medal haul came at Hangzhou in 2023. India won a record 28 gold medals and crossed the 100-medal mark for the first time, finishing fourth overall.

The progression in total medals has been striking. India went from 51 medals in 1951 to 57 in 1982, 65 in Guangzhou in 2010, 70 in Jakarta in 2018 and finally more than 100 at Hangzhou.

India's strongest sports at the Asian Games

Athletics is India's most successful Asian Games sport by a considerable margin. Through Hangzhou, Indian athletes had won 85 gold, 102 silver and 96 bronze medals, giving athletics a total of 283 medals.

Shooting is India's second-most successful medal sport, with 80 medals, followed by wrestling with 65 and boxing with more than 60.

Other major contributors include tennis, rowing, hockey, archery, squash and kabaddi. India's 11 kabaddi gold medals from 13 total medals underline the sport's remarkable conversion rate. India has also won both of its Asian Games cricket gold medals since the sport returned to the programme.

India's golden era at the Asian Games

The early editions established India as one of Asia's sporting powers. At New Delhi 1951, Lavy Pinto won the men's 100m and 200m, while Sachin Nag became the only Indian swimmer to win an Asian Games swimming gold to date. India also won football gold, while hockey continued its strong continental record.

The 1962 Games produced another landmark performance. Milkha Singh won gold in the 400m and 4x400m relay, adding to his 1958 200m and 400m titles. Wrestling also emerged as a major contributor.

After a prolonged period of fluctuating results, India hit a low at Beijing 1990, finishing 11th with just one gold medal. The recovery began in the following editions, with Doha 2006 becoming India's first away Games with more than 50 medals and Guangzhou 2010 producing 65 medals.

Hangzhou 2023: India's record Asian Games campaign

The Jakarta-Palembang Games in 2018 marked another major step, with India winning 16 gold and 70 medals.

Five years later, Hangzhou transformed the benchmark. India won 28 gold medals and more than 100 medals overall, finishing fourth. Shooting contributed seven golds and 22 medals, while athletics produced 29 medals and six golds.

India also topped the medal tables in archery, cricket, kabaddi and hockey. The Games produced India's first badminton gold through Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty, while Jyothi Surekha Vennam and Ojas Deotale each won three gold medals in compound archery.

India's most decorated Asian Games athletes

Several Indian athletes have left a lasting mark on the Games. P.T. Usha is listed with four gold and seven silver medals, while Leander Paes won five gold medals and eight medals overall in tennis.

Milkha Singh won four Asian Games gold medals, while shooter Jaspal Rana collected four golds. At Hangzhou, Jyothi Surekha Vennam and Ojas Deotale each won three gold medals in compound archery.

As India heads to Aichi-Nagoya 2026, the challenge is to build on the depth demonstrated at Hangzhou.
