Asian Games 2026 Day 5: Mirabai silver, hockey record and badminton bronze for India

India added three more medals to its Asian Games tally on Wednesday, with Mirabai Chanu finally ending her wait for an Asian Games medal, the men’s badminton team securing bronze and both skeet teams making the podium.

Chanu finished second in the women’s 49kg weightlifting event with a total of 198kg, combining an 87kg snatch with a 111kg clean and jerk. The silver medalist completed her collection of major international medals and gave India its first Asian Games weightlifting medal since 1998.

The shooting range also delivered two bronzes, with India finishing third in both the men’s and women’s skeet team events. Anantjeet Singh Naruka and Raiza Dhillon came close to individual medals too, finishing fourth in their respective finals. Manu Bhaker was fifth in the women’s 10m air pistol final.

India’s women produced one of the day’s most dominant performances in hockey, thrashing Thailand 20-1. Deepika Sehrawat scored nine goals, setting a new world record for goals by a woman in a single international match, while Navneet Kaur added four.

The men’s badminton team had to settle for bronze after a 1-3 semifinal defeat to China. Lakshya Sen and Ayush Shetty lost their singles matches, while Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty secured India’s only win before the deciding doubles went China's way.

There was also progress towards more medals. Roshibina Devi reached the women’s 60kg sanda final in wushu and will fight China’s Xiaoyu Zhang for gold. In kabaddi, both Indian teams advanced strongly, with the men beating Bangladesh 48-25 to reach the semifinals and the women defeating Iran 37-23 to remain unbeaten.

Jay Meena made history in soft tennis by securing India’s first Asian Games medal in the sport. He lost his men’s singles semifinal to Japan’s Takuya Kurosaka and took bronze.

In rowing, Balraj Panwar reached the men’s singles sculls medal final, while India also progressed in the men’s doubles and quadruple sculls. Table tennis saw both Indian mixed doubles pairs reach the quarterfinals, while boxers continued their winning run with Ankush Panghal’s 5-0 victory over Bahrain’s Vogel Hamsa.

India’s sepak takraw campaign ended despite a 2-1 win over the Philippines, as Japan advanced to the semifinals on set difference. In squash, Tanvi Khanna and Abhay Singh both opened their campaigns with straight-game victories.

Gyaneshwari Yadav also completed her Asian Games debut in the women’s 53kg weightlifting final, finishing with a 195kg total.

With more finals and medal events ahead, India’s campaign continues to gather momentum across multiple disciplines.
