The Asian Games 2026 began in earnest for India on Thursday, September 17, with the country's campaign getting underway two days before the official opening ceremony in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan.
India had just one scheduled sporting engagement, with Declan Marshall Gonsalves and Mohamed Anas Imran Beg competing in the men's doubles teqball event.
The Mumbai-based pair began their Group B campaign at the Nagoya City Higashi Sports Centre.
But they lost both their matches, starting with their first match against Vietnam, followed by a clash against the Republic of Korea and bowed out in the group stage itself.
The pair arrived at the Asian Games with significant pedigree in the sport, winning India's first Teqball World Championships medal, with a men's doubles bronze in 2024 in Vietnam.
Teqball is making its Asian Games debut in Aichi-Nagoya, and they had the opportunity to become India's first medallists in the sport at the continental multi-sport event.
Teqball is a Hungarian-invented sport combining elements of football and table tennis. Played on a curved table, it requires players to return the ball using any part of the body except the hands and arms.

Teqball, Men's Doubles: Gonsalves-Beg bow out in the group stage
A disappointing campaign for the former world medalist pair of Declan Marshall Gonsalves and Mohamed Anas Beg, exiting the Asian Games 2026 in the group stage.
The duo lost in straight games to Korea in their second group match of the men's doubles Teqball event and had earlier lost in straight games to Vietnam as well.
With these two defeats, the Indian pair bow out of the competition, finishing last in Group B.

Teqball, Men's Doubles: Gonsalves-Beg loses second consecutive match
Declan Marshall Gonsalves and Mohamed Anas Imran Beg went down 4-12, 7-12 against Korea's Lee Junsuk and Lee Taebeen in their second Group B match at the Asian Games.
After being completely outclassed in the first game, the Indian duo made a good start to the second game with a 4-0 lead.
But then, the Korean made a tremendous comeback, winning 12 of the next 15 points and winning the match.
With this second consecutive loss in Group B, the duo bowed out of the Asian Games men's doubles event in the early round.

Teqball, Men's Doubles: Gonsalves-Beg loses the first game to Korea
A poor run continues for the Indian doubles pair as the duo conceded the first game of their second group match against the Korean pair.
The duo could only score four points in the game, and the Korean take the early lead in the match.
If they fail to win the match, their campaign will be over as they finish last in the group of three teams, where only the top two progress to the quarterfinals.

Teqball: India lose opening match!
Declan Marshall Gonsalves and Mohamed Anas Imran Beg went down 10-12, 8-12 against Vietnam in their opening Group B match at the Nagoya City Higashi Sports Center.
The Indian pair kept the first set close but could not convert their opportunities at the crucial stages, with Vietnam edging it 12-10. The second set was more one-sided as the Vietnamese pair closed it out 12-8.
Gonsalves and Beg, who won India's first-ever Teqball World Championships medal with a men's doubles bronze in 2024, now turn their attention to their second Group B match against the Republic of Korea.
A positive result there will be important for their hopes of progressing to the knockout stage, with the competition format also providing a repechage route.
