Asian Games 2026: Sreeshankar, Vithya lead another big day for India

India enjoyed another strong day at the 2026 Asian Games on Monday, adding medals across athletics, shooting, boxing and kurash while several team events moved into the knockout stages.

Athletics produced six medals for India. Murali Sreeshankar and Gulveer Singh won silver in the men's long jump and 1500m, respectively, while Yashvir Singh and Rohit Yadav secured silver and bronze in the men's javelin throw. Parul Chaudhary and Vithya Ramraj added bronze medals in the women's 5000m and 400m hurdles.

Ramraj's medal was particularly significant as she clocked 54.75 seconds to break P T Usha's 42-year-old national record in the 400m hurdles. Avinash Sable also ended fourth in the men's 3000m steeplechase.

The women's 4x100m relay team finished fourth in a season-best 43.57 seconds, missing the bronze medal by just 0.05 seconds.

India also advanced to the mixed 4x100m relay final after finishing second in their heat in 41.54 seconds. The team of Gurindervir Singh, Abinaya Rajarajan, Animesh Kujur and Harita Bhadra finished third overall in the heats behind Thailand and China. Animesh had a fall during the final interchange but had already handed the baton to Harita.

Esha Singh won silver in the women's 25m pistol after surviving multiple shoot-offs before finishing runner-up to China's Xiao Jiaruixuan. India also missed out on a team medal after Rahi Sarnobat's final-stage error.

Pincky Balhara won India's first kurash medal of the Games, taking bronze in the women's 78kg category. She reached the semifinals before losing to South Korea's Sumin Mo.

Boxing added three more confirmed medals as Priya Ghanghas, Lovlina Borgohain and Kapil Pokhariya reached the semifinals with 5-0 victories over Miigona Samadova, Suyeon Song and Kim Gichae respectively.

In archery, Ganesh Thirumuru reached the men's compound quarterfinals after beating fellow Indian Sahil Jadhav, while Chikitha Taniparthi advanced in the women's event after a shoot-off. Defending champion Jyothi Surekha Vennam was eliminated.

India's squash teams both reached the quarterfinals, with the men topping Pool A after 3-0 wins over China and South Korea. The women also beat China and Japan to reach the last eight.

The men's hockey team completed a 10-0 win over Bangladesh, while the volleyball team defeated Hong Kong 3-0 for a second consecutive victory.

Kishore Kumar Anbarasu reached the surfing quarterfinals, while Pincky Balhara won bronze in women's 78kg kurash. India's women's sepak takraw doubles team lost 1-2 to Japan.

In sailing, Ravindra Sharma and Shraddha Verma are seventh in the mixed dinghy after five races. In tennis, Rutuja Sampatrao and Ankita Raina exited the women's doubles, while Sumit Nagal's singles match was delayed.
