Preview

Bottom-placed Odisha FC take on fourth on the table NorthEast United in the Indian Super League (ISL) on Tuesday. The Kalinga Warriors have once again found it tough in the league this season and have just one point to show in six games. Their opponents have had a flying start to the campaign but after Friday’s 1-0 defeat against Jamshedpur FC, they need to buckle up and get some points on board.

The Highlanders come into the game as favourites. Gerard Nus’ men haven’t lost any of their last 10 away games and will be looking to get all three points against a side that has lost three in a row at home. However, the head-to-head record for the last five matches has a more balanced look to it with both sides (including Odisha/Delhi Dynamos) winning two each. Stuart Baxter’s side haven’t scored in two of their three home matches this season which makes winning against a resolute NorthEast side an even more uphill task. They have also conceded 7 goals in the first half this season, indicating a soft underbelly which the Highlanders will look to exploit.

Squad Overview

Stuart Baxter has to find a way to stop his side from leaking goals. Although their back four of Shubham Sarangi, Jacob Tratt, Steven Taylor and Hendry Antonay look strong on paper, individual mistakes have cost them dearly so far. It is still unclear if Marcelinho will be able to start this game after making appearances from the bench in the last three games. Moreover, Gaurav Bora and Cole Alexander have barely managed to paper over the cracks in midfield while Vinit Rai’s comeback from injury also hasn’t been of much help. However, Baxter will be looking at Manuel Onwu and Diego Mauricio for some goals upfront as he desperately seeks three points.

Gerard Nus clearly stated in the pre-match press conference that defeat in the last match has made his team hungrier. He will look to field an attacking eleven and put pressure on an out-of-sorts Odisha defence. One tends to forget that they too haven’t won in three games and NorthEast fans will be hoping that the likes of Idrissa Sylla, Luis Machado and Kwesi Appiah can improve their morale against an under-confident Odisha side. They are expected to field their strongest back four in Gurjinder Kumar, Dylan Fox, Benjamin Lambot and Ashutosh Mehta who will be supported by the very capable Khassa Camara. Ninthoi Meetei, Suhair VP and Rochharzela should also feature. Moreover, their midfield flair player Federico Gallego should also be in the squad following a substitute appearance in the last game.
