Atanu Das put up a brilliant show to win the bronze medal in the men's recurve category in the first stage of the Indoor Archery World Series 2025 in Lausanne, Switzerland, on Saturday.

This was his first international event since the 2023 Asian Games. However, Atanu did not show any rustiness and shot a prolific 582 in 60 shots in the indoor archery event - an 18m target archery event.

This was his first indoor archery medal in seven years after a title run at Las Vegas 2017 Indoor Archery World Cup Stage 4.

Atanu started the elimination round magnificently, shooting ten perfect 30s out of the 14 sets to reach the semifinal. But in the semifinals, he had a weak set of 27, which hurt his chances of reaching the final.

However, he regained the momentum in the bronze medal match to defeat (6-4) the home favourite Thomas Rufer, claiming three out of the five perfect sets and maintaining an average of 9.80.

Meanwhile, Deepika Kumari, the lone Indian archer in the women's recurve category, missed out on a medal after losing her quarterfinal match to the eventual champion Denisa Barankova of Slovakia.

No medal in the compound

Indian compound archers failed to win any medals in Lausanne as Uday Kamboj lost in the quarterfinal of the men's compound event to top seed Braden Gellenthien of the USA in a shootoff.

Uday had a positive start to the game as he took an early lead in the match and carried forward the momentum after four sets. A low score of 28 in the final set levelled the match, and Braden won in the shootoff.

In the women's compound, Avneet Kaur and Muskan Kirar lost their respective pre-quarterfinal matches to second-seed Lisell Jatma of Estonia and first-seed Tanja Gallengthein of Denmark respectively.
