Sports Ministry announces Rs 10 lakh for treatment of archer Limba Ram
Former Olympian and India’s most prominent archer during the 1990s, Limba Ram is suffering from Parkinson’s disease and has recently requested for financial aid for his treatments. The 46-year old is struck heavily with the neurological illness, which can be controlled but not cured. As per the reports in the Times of India, there is a possibility that might be operated for a spinal issue, but that would be done only after further medical examination. Although he was not able to address to the media, his wife Merian Jenny spared a few words where she emphasized on the fact that they need a financial assistant. "The doctors say his illness is not curable but is very much controllable. All my husband needs is good medical treatment which he's getting here with all doctors so supportive and sympathetic towards him. It's just that we need financial support to continue his treatment. Private hospitals in Delhi will charge a fortune, so we can't take him there," said Merian. The Archery Association of India (AAI) has helped the former athlete, by urgently admitting him to a city hospital and also instructed the Sports Authority of India (SAI) officials to shift Limba to AIIMS as soon as possible. The SAI officials made sure that he faced no problems at AIIMS and also made arrangements for his wife Jenny’s stay at the residential hostel inside the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium complex. As per the official twitter handle of the SAI, the Sports Ministry has already sanctioned Rs. 10 lakhs for the treatment of the former archer. "Limba Ram is a champion of Indian sport and his speedy recovery is of utmost concern. #SAI Officials have met him and Rs. 5 lakhs will be released for his further treatment," stated SAI’s tweet. The second tweet says, "Additional Rs. 5 Lakh medical help to legendary archer Shri Limba Ram has been released from YAS Ministry 's Pt. Deendayal Upadhyay National Welfare Fund for Sportspersons. He is presently undergoing medical treatment in AIIMS, Delhi." https://twitter.com/IndiaSports/status/1126045493497253888 Apart from the various accolades, he won in his career, the most memorable was the 1992 Barcelona Olympics campaign where he missed the bronze medal by a single point.
