Commonwealth Games 2026: Rishikanta Singh claims silver in men's 60kg weightlifting

India's Rishikanta Singh clinched the silver medal in the men's 60kg weightlifting event at the Commonwealth Games 2026, producing a record-breaking performance in the snatch before finishing second overall in Glasgow.

The silver medal also made Rishikanta Singh the first male weightlifter from Manipur to win a Commonwealth Games medal.

The state has previously produced several decorated women weightlifters, including Olympic medallist Mirabai Chanu, Sanjita Chanu, Renu Bala Chanu and Sonia Chanu, but Rishikanta is the first Manipuri man to reach the Commonwealth Games weightlifting podium.

Rishikanta made a confident start by clearing 116kg in his opening snatch attempt before improving to 119kg in his second lift.

The Indian then successfully lifted 121kg in his third attempt to set a new national record, surpassing his previous best of 120kg set at last year's Commonwealth Championships. The effort also established a new Commonwealth Games snatch record.

Malaysia's Bin Kasdan Mohamad Aniq matched the Indian's 121kg in his final snatch attempt, setting up an exciting battle in the clean and jerk.

Rishikanta, who entered the clean and jerk atop the standings, managed 145kg in his opening attempt but failed to clear 148kg and 151kg in his remaining two lifts. He finished with a total of 266kg.

Kasdan, meanwhile, successfully lifted 145kg, 149kg and 152kg in the clean and jerk to register a Games record total of 273kg, securing the gold medal.

Rishikanta's silver adds the second medal to India's tally at the Commonwealth Games 2026 and continues his impressive run on the international stage.
