Asian Y&J Weightlifting C'ships: Martina Devi wins three medals
Martina Devi Maibam clinched two silver and one bronze medal in the junior 87+ Kg category with a total of 225 Kg.
Martina Devi Maibam, India's final competitor at the Asian Youth and Junior Weightlifting Championships, clinched two silver and one bronze medal in the junior 87+ Kg category in Doha, Qatar on Wednesday.
Martina could not find her best form and finished way below her personal best of 237 Kg and had to settle for a silver medal, having a total of 225 Kg. She started the competition by lifting 96 Kg in the snatch to win the bronze medal.
However, she did a better performance in the Clean & Jek and managed to lift 129 Kg and clinch the silver medal. She also tried a final lift of 136 Kg in C&J but faced a slight injury on her knee and failed to do so.
With Martina's three medals, India ended the Junior competition with 12 medals: 8 Silver, and 4 bronze medals.
Earlier on Tuesday, India's Parv Chaudhary clinched two bronze medals in the Youth 96 kg category with a total lift of 303 kg (135 Kg Snatch, 168 Kg C&J) to conclude the youth competition for India.
India has a comparatively stronger outing in the youth section, ending up with a whopping 21 medal medals: Seven gold, eight Silver, and six bronze
Summary of the 2024 Asian Youth and Junior Weightlifting Championships
The Indian team had a strong outing at the competition winning a lot of medals and generating new youth and junior national records.
Starting with a brilliant performance of Jyoshna Bar in the women's 40 Kg youth category to L. Nilam Devi leveling Mirabai Chanu's senior national record in 55 Kg, the Indian contingent has given a lot of moments to cherish.
In the previous edition, India won 45 medals at the home event in 2023 but this time India faced a very tough challenge and had to settle with 33 medals across both junior and youth categories.
