25-year old Sowjanya Bavisetti fulfilled her long-standing dream of winning a national title after she won the 2019 National Tennis tournament on Saturday by beating Prerna Bhambri in the Fenesta Opens finals 6-4, 6-2.

To make the occasion more momentous for Sowjanya, it was her inspiration, Sania Mirza, who handed her the trophy after she won the national title.

Sowjanya has been making waves around the Indian domestic circuit for a while now

Sowjanya's journey to the national title

After playing nationally, Sowjanya moved to the international scene, where she faced considerable success. With three singles and eight doubles events, Sowjanya has been making waves around the Indian domestic circuit for a while now. She won the Sharm El Sheikh trophy in 2013, 2014 and in 2016.

She grabbed eight titles between 2013 and 2018 in the doubles front and went on to achieve her career-best ranking of 402 in doubles. Her best ranking in the singles event has been 571.

However, Sowjanya did not have the greatest starts to 2019 as her rankings slid from 879 on the WTA Tour to 893. Her best showing has been a runners-up finish in Tunisia in doubles, and a quarters appearance in Thailand this July.
