India’s Suresh Dhakshineswar and his British partner Luca Pow reached the semifinals of the ATP 250 Winston-Salem Open on Wednesday night.

After causing a big upset in the first round of the doubles event by defeating the sixth seeds, Ariel Behar and Andres Molteni, in a deciding match tiebreak, Suresh and Pow maintained their mojo in the quarterfinals as they won another deciding match tiebreak, this time against Gonzalo Escobar and Aleksandr Nedovyesov.

Suresh and Pow won the match 6-1, 4-6, 10-8 (tiebreaker).

Suresh and Pow, who play together for Wake Forest University in the NCAA US College circuit, took the first set 6-1 quite comfortably. However, Escobar and Nedovyesov fought back, winning the second set 6-4.

The match then went to a deciding tiebreak, where, drawing on their experience from the first round, the Indo-British pair prevailed in a thrilling encounter, winning the tiebreak 10-8 and securing the match.

Suresh and Pow, who received a wildcard entry into the main draw, are considered underdogs in this tournament. But they have played superb tennis to keep themselves in contention for the Winston-Salem Open title.

This is Dhakshineswar’s first ATP Tour main draw appearance.
