Sumit Nagal pulls out of India's Davis Cup away clash against Sweden
India's away Davis Cup tie against Sweden is scheduled for later this month.
Sumit Nagal pulled out of India's Davis Cup World Group I tie against Sweden on Monday, citing a back issue.
India's away Davis Cup tie against Sweden is scheduled for later this month.
In an X post, World No. 73 Nagal, India's main-stay in men's singles, wrote, "I was looking forward to representing India in the upcoming Davis Cup tie against Sweden. However, due to a back issue that has been bothering me for the past few weeks, doctors have advised me to rest for the next two weeks, leaving me without enough time to prepare and compete in Sweden. This same issue led to my withdrawl from the US Open doubles."
"I am deeply disappointed to be missing this tie, but I have to listen to my body to prevent the back from worsening, so that I can finish the season strong and healthy. Good luck to the Indian team - I will be cheering for you all from home!," Nagal added.
The 27-year-old made a first-round exit at the US Open Grand after he lost to Tallon Griekspoor in straight sets. Nagal was the only Indian tennis player at the US Open in the singles category.
Later, he and his partner Yoshihito Nishioka gave a bye to the men's doubles first-round match.
Earlier this year, Nagal won his career's sixth ATP Challenger tennis title at Heilbronn Neckarcup in Germany.
Nagal also became the first Indian since Ramanathan Krishnan in 1989 to beat a seeded player and reach the second round of the Australian Open Grand Slam in January.
