India’s tennis landscape saw significant shifts this week as Sumit Nagal and Rohan Bopanna registered notable drops in the ATP rankings following disappointing performances on the professional circuit.

After spending 10 consecutive months in the coveted ATP top-100, Sumit Nagal has dropped to World No. 106 in the latest rankings.

Nagal entered the top-100 in February 2024 and maintained his spot until now, supported by a strong showing at last year’s Australian Open.

However, the 26-year-old has struggled to sustain his form.

Since Wimbledon 2024, Nagal has participated in 18 tournaments but managed only three main-draw wins across the ATP Tour and Challenger events.

A top-100 ranking is crucial for players, providing direct entry into Grand Slam events and guaranteeing significant prize money, even for early exits. Nagal’s current ranking could complicate his path back to the main draws of major tournaments.

Bopanna drops out of top-20

Veteran doubles specialist Rohan Bopanna, aged 44, has slipped five spots to World No. 21 after an early exit at the Australian Open.

Partnering with Colombia’s Nicolás Barrientos, Bopanna was defending a significant number of points from his 2024 title run in Melbourne.

This marks the end of Bopanna’s uninterrupted stint in the top-20, which began in October 2022.
