Indian tennis player Sumit Nagal took to social media to address his recent absence from the Davis Cup, following criticism from the All India Tennis Association (AITA) after India’s 4-0 defeat in the tournament.

In his post, Nagal expressed his deep respect for representing his country, emphasizing that the decision to withdraw was not made lightly.

"Representing my country is always a privilege and an honor that I hold in the highest regard," Nagal wrote.

Nagal reiterated his commitment to the national team.

Nagal explained that, after consulting with his medical team, it was clear that competing with an injury could jeopardize his health and the team’s performance.

He stressed that it was in the best interest of both himself and the team to avoid further injury.

"I believe it is better for the team and for the country to have someone at 100% rather than risking further injury and potentially disrupting the match. I had informed AITA well in advance about my inability to participate," he noted.

The tennis star also addressed concerns regarding compensation, clarifying that it is standard practice for athletes to be compensated for their participation in events, including those representing their country.

Nagal reassured fans of his commitment to representing India and his anticipation of future opportunities to do so.

"I look forward to future opportunities to wear the national colors and make my country proud, both on and off the court," he stated.

The statement from Nagal comes after AITA’s criticism.

AITA had also released a statement criticizing players like Nagal, Yuki Bhambri, and Mukund Sasikumar for their absence while participating in other tournaments.

"Players like Sumit Nagal, Yuki Bhambri and Mukund Sasikumar refused to play for country even though they were participating in other tournaments elsewhere", the statement read.

AITA's spokesperson, Dhupar, suggested that the presence of players like Nagal and Yuki Bhambri might have improved India's chances, questioning the management of AITA and the team.

Dhupar had also pointed out that Nagal, who is currently participating in a tournament in China, should address the issues regarding his fitness.
