Australian Open: Sumit Nagal falls in straight sets to World No. 26
Sumit Nagal put up a strong fight in the third set, but ultimately lost in straight sets in his first-round match.
Indian ace tennis player Sumit Nagal suffered a first-round exit, losing in straight sets to world no. 26 Tomas Machac of Czechia at the 2025 Australian Open in Melbourne, Victoria, on Sunday.
Nagal put on a brilliant performance in the third set but ultimately ran out of steam against Machac's strong return game, resulting in a straight-set defeat with scores of 3-6, 1-6, and 5-7 at the Show Court 2 in Melbourne Park.
A Powerful serving display from Tomas
Nagal started the match decently, displaying some impressive serves and comfortably winning his first three serving games. However, Tomas managed to find a breakthrough and secured two consecutive breaks, taking the opening set 6-3.
In the second set, Nagal had a similar beginning and earned his first break point in the opening game but failed to convert that crucial opportunity. Tomas then elevated his game, dominating the set and winning it 6-1.
Nagal had a brief opportunity for a comeback in the third set when he achieved his first break of the match in the second game.
He maintained his lead until the seventh game, despite facing significant pressure on his serve from Tomas. Ultimately, Tomas managed to break back and won the set amid a series of tense final games.
Although Nagal showcased some exceptional forehand returns, he fell short in the end, concluding his campaign at the first Grand Slam of the year.
With this loss, the Indian campaign comes to an end in singles, but the top Indian doubles player will be in action soon, including the defending champion Rohan Bopanna with his new partner.
