India men's and women's teams win Commonwealth Table Tennis Championships

Indian men's and women's teams emerged victorious at the 21st Commonwealth Table Tennis Championships after commendable victories over their respective opponents on Friday in Cuttack, Odisha. The Indian women's team defeated England 3-0 in the final. The Indian trio comprising Archana Kamath, Manika Batra and Madhurika Patkar took on England's Tin-Tin Ho, Denise Payet and Emily Bolton, respectively. While Archana won the proceedings by 3-1, Manika and Madhurika won their matches by 3-0 margins. This is Indian women's team's first-ever gold medal at the Commonwealth Championships which started in 1971. The women's team had earlier defeated Singapore 3-0 in the semifinal fixtures. The men's team defeated England 3-2 in the final, with wins by Harmeet Desai, Sathiyan Gnanasekharan and Sharath Kamal. India were down by two ties the trio staged a commendable comeback to bag the championship. The men's team had defeated Singapore 3-0 in the semifinal.
