Commonwealth Games 2026: All you need to know about Aryan Nehra

The Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games will mark the Games debut of India's long-distance freestyle swimmer Aryan Nehra.

At just 22, Nehra earned his place in the Indian squad after a record-breaking performance at the Senior National Aquatics Championships in Ahmedabad.

He became the first Indian swimmer to break the eight-minute barrier in the men's 800m freestyle, clocking 7:59.36 to win gold.

He also rewrote the national record in the men's 1500m freestyle with a time of 15:14.88, comfortably surpassing the Commonwealth Games qualifying standard. The Ahmedabad meet also secured his qualification for the 2026 Asian Games.

Ranked India's top swimmer in the 800m freestyle, 1500m freestyle and 400m individual medley, Nehra heads to Glasgow as one of the country's brightest prospects in long-distance swimming.

Swimming journey

Born in Ahmedabad to a civil servant father and an educator mother, Aryan Nehra's swimming journey began in a hotel pool.

Fascinated by the water, he took up competitive swimming at the age of nine, training under coach Kamlesh Nanavati at the Gujarat Vidyapith Academy. His younger sister, Anaya, is also a competitive swimmer.

Nehra announced himself on the international stage at the 2017 Asian Age Group Championships in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.

Aged just 13, he won bronze medals in both the 800m and 1500m freestyle events, highlighting his potential as one of India's brightest young distance swimmers.

Training and development

Determined to compete with the world's best, Nehra expanded his training overseas. In 2016, he trained at the FINA Centre in Phuket, Thailand. Over the years, he has been a part of the Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS) Development group.

In 2021, he earned a scholarship to the University of Florida, where he studied economics while representing the Florida Gators in the NCAA circuit. Training under Olympic champion Anthony Nesty, his daily routine included nearly six hours of swimming and strength conditioning.

Senior National Aquatic Championships 2026

Nehra delivered the performance of his career in Ahmedabad, winning gold in the 800m freestyle with a national record of 7:59.36 to become the first Indian swimmer to break the eight-minute barrier. He followed it up with another gold in the 1500m freestyle, setting a new national record of 15:14.88.

Asian Age Group Championships 2024

He won gold in the 400m freestyle with a championship record of 7:26.64 and helped India secure gold in the 4x200m freestyle relay. He also claimed silver medals in the 400m, 800m and 1500m freestyle events.

World Aquatics Championships 2023

Nehra recorded the fastest-ever time by an Indian in the 800m freestyle heats, clocking 8:00.76, and also competed in the 1500m freestyle.

Asian Games 2023

Representing India in Hangzhou, Nehra competed in the 200m, 400m, 800m and 1500m freestyle events, along with the 4x200m freestyle relay. India finished sixth in the relay, while Nehra placed seventh in both the 800m and 1500m freestyle events.

Today, he holds national records in the 400m freestyle, 400m individual medley, 800m freestyle and 1500m freestyle.

Eyes on Glasgow

Since making his Asian Games and World Championships debut in 2023, Nehra has continued to make rapid progress.

His record-breaking performances at the Senior National Aquatic Championships secured qualification for both the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games and the Aichi-Nagoya 2026 Asian Games.

The Glasgow Games will mark the biggest milestone of his career so far. Having already rewritten Indian swimming history by becoming the country's first swimmer to break the eight-minute barrier in the 800m freestyle, Nehra will now look to establish himself on the Commonwealth stage and continue India's rise in international swimming.
