Air India has announced that it will waive handling charges for sports equipment on select domestic and international flights, offering athletes and sports enthusiasts savings of between ₹2,000 and ₹7,000 depending on the route and fare category.

The move is aimed at making air travel more convenient and affordable for passengers travelling with specialised sporting gear.

In an official statement, the airline said the waiver applies to sports equipment carried on eligible fare categories across both domestic and international routes.

The benefit is available on Economy Flex, Premium Economy Flex and all Business Class fares.

Excess baggage charges still applicable

While handling charges have been waived, Air India clarified that standard excess baggage charges will continue to apply if passengers exceed their baggage allowance.

The baggage limits are 15kg for Economy Class, 25kg for Premium Economy and 30kg for Business Class. Travellers carrying baggage beyond these limits will have to pay the applicable excess baggage fees.

According to Air India, the initiative is intended to provide greater value and convenience to athletes, sportspersons and sports enthusiasts who frequently travel with sports equipment.

Most Indian airlines currently levy separate handling charges for sports equipment, making Air India's decision one of the first such initiatives in the country.
