South Africa joins race to host 2036 Olympics; India among strong contenders

South Africa has officially joined the race to host the 2036 Olympic Games, as confirmed by the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

A delegation led by Sports Minister Gayton McKenzie and South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (SASCOC) President Barry Hendricks recently visited the IOC headquarters in Lausanne to begin preliminary discussions.

The proposal, supported by IOC Member Anant Singh and Honorary Member Sam Ramsamy, aims to bring the first-ever Olympic Games to the African continent.

IOC President Thomas Bach welcomed South Africa’s initiative, calling it an opportunity to unite the continent through sports and inspire future generations of African athletes.

South Africa’s entry adds to a growing list of nations vying for the Games, with India, another prominent contender, already having expressed its interest.

India’s bid focuses on hosting the event in Ahmedabad, leveraging its robust sports infrastructure and global ambitions to boost its position as a leading sporting nation.
