India is among the seven countries who are officially in contention to host the 2036 Olympic Games, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) announced on Monday.

The other six countries in contention include Turkiye, Germany, Hungary, Qatar, South Korea, and South Africa.

The IOC had announced the seven nations as interested parties last month as a part of host selection process transparency, whilst also setting a deadline for any other National Olympic Committee (NOC) to put their hat in the ring.

"This period has now come to an end, and no additional Interested Party has come forward," the IOC said in a statement.

The month of November 2026 will now see each of the seven interested countries present a virtual presentation before the Future Host Commission.

The IOC will provide its feasibility assessment by March 2027 before the 2036 Strategic Dialouge is opened.

Among the seven countries in contention, only Germany and South Korea have previously hosted the Olympic Games.

Hungary was in contention to host the Olympics in 1920, which were later cancelled due to World War I.
