Indian Tennis: Prajnesh Gunneswaran reaches final of Orlando Open ATP Challenger

Update: 2020-11-22 06:56 GMT

Indian tennis player Prajnesh Gunneswaran has reached the finals of the ongoing Orlando Open, an ATP Challenger event in Florida, USA. The Chennai-born Davis Cupper beat USA's Christopher Eubanks in straight sets 6-4, 7-6 on Saturday to make his way into the final.

The fourth-seeded Indian will take on another American Brandon Nakashima in the finals on Sunday night to win the USD 52,080 hard-court tournament. Earlier, with his win over Kazakhstan’s Dmitry Popko in the quarters, Gunneswaran climbed to at least the 133rd spot on the ATP charts, as the top-ranked Indian tennis player.

With Sumit Nagal, who is placed 136th, drawing his season to a close last month, the latest movements on the ATP Rankings chart will see Prajnesh Gunneswaran become the highest-ranked Indian, a position he last held in 2019.

In 2019, Gunneswaran made it to the main draw of all the four Grand Slams and record some impressive wins on the ATP circuit. Following the COVID lockdown impositions, he was looking forward to a competitive 2020.

Gunnewaran made it to the semi-final appearance of the Wolffkran Open, an ATP Challenger in Ismaning, Germany and reached the final of the Atlantic Tire Championships -- also an ATP Challenger event -- in North Carolina. He reached the final of the Cary Challenger last week and carried his good form into this event.
