Kho Kho World Cup Champions from Karnataka decline cash prize over lack of recognition
Two Karnataka players from India’s inaugural Kho Kho World Cup-winning teams rejected the state government’s ₹5 lakh cash prize, citing insufficient recognition compared to other sports like cricket.
Two Karnataka players, who represented India in the victorious inaugural Kho Kho World Cup teams, have turned down the state government's cash prize of ₹5 lakh, voicing concerns over the lack of acknowledgment for their achievements.
MK Gautham, a member of the men’s team, and Chaitra B, from the women’s team, revealed their decision following a felicitation ceremony by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah. Despite the gesture, the players believe their efforts have not been adequately valued.
“This is not about disrespecting the Chief Minister but about the respect we deserve as players. Karnataka and Maharashtra were the only states to contribute two players each to the World Cup-winning teams, yet Maharashtra’s support for its athletes has been far better,” Gautham told the press.
He also criticised the disparity between cricket and traditional sports like Kho Kho. “Government funds heavily favor cricket, and announcements of rewards for cricketers happen even before the game ends. In contrast, rural sports like ours receive little recognition or encouragement,” he added.
Chaitra B echoed his sentiments, calling for equitable recognition for all sportspersons. “We’ve won medals for the country, yet we’re deprived of the support and facilities that athletes from other sports enjoy. This unfair treatment disheartens players and discourages future participation in rural sports,” she said.
The issue highlights a broader concern regarding the unequal treatment of traditional sports in India. With Chief Minister Siddaramaiah also holding the sports portfolio, the players hope their decision sparks a conversation about fair recognition and support for all sports.
