Tamil Nadu Women Kabaddi players attacked during match in Punjab
Tamil Nadu women's kabaddi players were attacked during inter-university match in Punjab after a foul call sparked chaos.
A shocking incident unfolded during the North Zone Inter-University & All India Inter-University Kabaddi (Women) Championship 2024-25 in Bathinda, Punjab, as women kabaddi players from Tamil Nadu were assaulted during a match against Darbhanga University.
The altercation began when a foul was called against the team from Mother Teresa University. When the players appealed the decision, the situation escalated.
Allegedly, the referee attacked a member of the Tamil Nadu team, leading to a physical clash between players from both sides. Spectators, reportedly supporting the Darbhanga University team, joined the fray, further intensifying the conflict.
Videos circulating on social media captured the chaotic scene, including chairs being thrown and women from Tamil Nadu universities being attacked.
The Tamil Nadu contingent included student-athletes from Mother Teresa University, Periyar University, Alagappa University, and Bharathiar University. Sports Minister and Tamil Nadu Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin confirmed the incident, calling it unfortunate.
“The athletes suffered minor scratches, but no serious injuries,” he stated, adding that the Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu (SDAT) had acted swiftly by coordinating with local authorities to ensure the players' safety.
Following the incident, the Tamil Nadu players were relocated to Delhi for their safety. Stalin assured the public that all 36 players were unharmed and would soon return home.
The incident drew widespread condemnation. Former AIADMK minister D Jayakumar criticized the lack of safety for athletes, demanding strict action against those responsible. “Ensuring player safety during tournaments is far more important than rewarding them after victories,” he remarked.
As investigations continue, this incident has raised concerns about the security and well-being of players participating in national-level competitions.
