HIL 2024: Two-time Olympic medallist Lily Owsley joins Delhi SG Pipers
The British midfielder will be a part of the upcoming HIL season, replacing Xan De Waard, who steps away for recovery.
Delhi SG Pipers announced on Saturday that they have acquired the services of English midfielder and women's hockey superstar Lily Owsley for the upcoming Hockey India League (HIL) season.
Lily Owsley is a highly decorated player, having two medals at the Olympic Games, including a gold medal in the 2016 Rio Olympics and a bronze in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics for Great Britain.
Besides being a two-time Olympic medallist, Owsley has also won gold and silver in the 2022 and 2014 Commonwealth Games respectively.
She also has two European Championship medals, a gold in 2015 London and a bronze in 2017 in Amstelveen, Netherlands.
She will replace the 28-year-old Dutch midfielder Xan de Waard in their women's team after she pulled out from this season of the HIL due to personal reasons.
"Losing Xan de Waard, undoubtedly one of the best players in the world, is a setback for the team. But being able to replace her with a 2-time Olympic medal winner Lily Owsley, is a big relief," said Delhi SG Pipers women's team coach Dave Smolenaars.
"She will bring in her experience, leadership, and high-speed play to help the team reach its potential," he added.
SG Sports, Media and Entertainment (SGSE) CEO, Mahesh Bhupathi welcomed Owsley into the team. He said, "Lily's inclusion is fantastic for the Pipers and I welcome her to the squad. With two Olympic medals in her kitty, she brings with her a wealth of experience for us which will be of immense help for us. She can control the game with her skill and abilities, and her role as an attacking midfielder will play a pivotal role for the Delhi SG Pipers squad."
