Women's Junior Asia Cup: India defeat Bangladesh 13-1 in the opening game

Defending champions India kicked off their Women's Junior Asia Cup with a resounding 13-1 win over Bangladesh in Oman on Sunday. Mumtaz Khan slammed four goals while Kanika Siwach and Deepika slotted home a hat-trick.

Mumtaz (27th, 32nd, 53rd, 58th), Kanika (12th, 51st, 52nd), Deepika (7th, 20th, 55th), Manisha (10th), Beauty Dung Dung (33rd) and vice-captain Sakshi Rana (43rd) hit the board for India, while Bangladesh's Orpita Pal (12th) was the only goal-scorer for Bangladesh in the Pool A game.

India took early control of the game with Deepika converting a penalty corner to give the team a 1-0 lead.

With India exerting pressure on Bangladesh with waves of attacks, the Indian girls earned 12 penalty corners against Bangladesh's one.

Three minutes later, Manisha scored from a penalty corner before Kanika scored a field goal in the 12th minute taking advantage of a defensive lapse.

With India going up 3-0, Bangladesh gave one back by converting a penalty corner, with Orpita Pal scoring for them. 

However, with India continuing to dominate the game Bangladesh could hardly stop the Indians from breaching their defence.

Deepika scored with a brilliant field goal in the 20th minute to get her second goal of the match.

With three minutes to go for the half-time, Mumtaz extended India's lead to 5-1.

When the third quarter began, Mumtaz's 32nd-minute field goal gave India a 6-1 lead. Beauty Dung Dung put India 7-1 up by slotting home another goal through a penalty corner a minute later.

Sakshi also got her name on the score sheet with a 43rd-minute goal (8-1).

In the fourth and final quarter, India slammed home three more goals, with Kanika slamming two goals in quick succession to bring up her hat-trick.

India could have scored more goals had Bangladesh Mohua not made so many saves.

India will face Malaysia in their second group game on Monday.
