A goalkeeper's role goes beyond making saves - they are the last line of defence and often determine a team's success.
In Indian football, several shot-stoppers have consistently delivered, racking up clean sheets over the years.
Here’s a look at the top six goalkeepers with the most clean sheets in Indian Super League history:
1. Vishal Kaith – 51 Clean Sheets (139 Matches, 37.3%)
Currently regarded as one of the most reliable goalkeepers in the Indian Super League (ISL), Vishal Kaith leads the chart with 51 clean sheets in 139 matches.
His incredible ability to organise defences and produce clutch saves has made him a standout performer, especially for Mohun Bagan.
Kaith broke the record for most clean sheets in a single ISL season (12 in 2024-25) on Wednesday and has been a key figure in his club's success.
Earlier, he maintained 11 clean sheets in the 2022-23 season, playing a crucial role in Mohun Bagan’s ISL title run and making a vital penalty save in the final.
2. Gurpreet Singh Sandhu – 49 Clean Sheets (157 Matches, 31.2%)
The Bengaluru FC and India No. 1, Gurpreet Singh Sandhu, has amassed 49 clean sheets in 157 matches.
His towering presence in the goal and experience make him a defensive pillar for both club and country.
One of his best-ever seasons came in 2019-20 when he kept 11 clean sheets in 20 matches, winning the ISL Golden Glove.
That campaign saw Bengaluru FC boast one of the best defensive records in league history, conceding just 13 goals in the regular season.
3. Amrinder Singh – 49 Clean Sheets (180 Matches, 27.2%)
Despite playing more matches than Gurpreet, Amrinder Singh also has 49 clean sheets. But he achieved it with a slightly lower success rate (27.2%).
Known for his fearless approach, Amrinder played a crucial role in Mumbai City FC’s ISL triumph in 2020-21, securing 10 clean sheets that season.
Although he narrowly missed out on the Golden Glove that year, his performances were instrumental in Mumbai City’s League Winners’ Shield and the ISL title-winning campaign.
4. TP Rehenesh – 42 Clean Sheets (140 Matches, 30.0%)
A dependable presence in Indian football, TP Rehenesh has 42 clean sheets from 140 matches.
Playing for clubs like NorthEast United FC, Kerala Blasters, and Jamshedpur FC, he has often been the difference between victory and defeat for his teams.
While he may not have won as many accolades as some of his contemporaries, his consistency ensures he remains among the top goalkeepers in the league.
5. Subrata Paul – 30 Clean Sheets (95 Matches, 31.6%)
A true veteran, Subrata Paul, famously known as the "Spiderman of India," has secured 30 clean sheets in 95 matches.
His experience and leadership have been vital assets for every club he has played for, including Mumbai City FC.
While his peak years may be behind him, Paul’s legacy as one of India’s greatest goalkeepers remains undisputed.
His ability to make acrobatic saves and inspire his team ensured he remained a preferred goalkeeper for his team, be it the club or the national team, throughout his career.
6. Arindam Bhattacharya – 30 Clean Sheets (100 Matches, 30.0%)
Before Vishal Kaith took over as Mohun Bagan’s No. 1, Arindam Bhattacharya was the main man between the posts.
His best-ever season came in 2020-21 when he kept 10 clean sheets and won the ISL Golden Glove for having the best goal-conceded ratio.
His performances were vital in Mohun Bagan's title race that season, though the Mariners narrowly missed out on the gong as they conceded it to Mumbai City FC in the final.
Arindam’s sharp reflexes and penalty-saving ability have made him a solid and experienced goalkeeper in Indian football.
These goalkeepers have left their mark on Indian football through their incredible shot-stopping ability, consistency, and match-winning clean sheets.
As Vishal Kaith continues to raise the bar with his record-breaking 2024-25 campaign, it will be interesting to see if any of the upcoming goalkeepers can challenge these legends in the years to come.
