Mohun Bagan Super Giant (MBSG) head coach Jose Molina expressed his joy after his team registered a convincing 3-0 victory over Kerala Blasters FC (KBFC) in the Indian Super League (ISL) at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Kochi on Saturday.
The Mariners' emphatic win saw them establish a decisive ten-point lead over second-placed FC Goa as the league approaches its business end, with only three game weeks remaining. With 49 points, Mohun Bagan is now virtually uncatchable, inching closer to clinching the League Shield.
"We are in a good way. We are happy with the three important points today. We are one step closer to getting the shield. We have to keep going, keep working, because the job is still not done," Molina said during the post-match press conference, as quoted on the official ISL website.
"We are going to celebrate tonight. But tomorrow, we will start thinking about the Odisha FC match in Kolkata, where we will try to win again. It could be the game that gives us the League Shield. Now, more than ever, we must stay focused and aim for victory in the next match,” he added.
Mohun Bagan took a 2-0 lead in the first half, courtesy of Jamie Maclaren's brace. Spanish defender Alberto Rodriguez extended that to 3-0 by scoring his fifth goal of the season in the second half, sealing Mohun Bagan SG's third league double over the Blasters.
Despite their commanding position, Molina urged his players to maintain their momentum as they stand on the brink of history. Mohun Bagan can secure the title during their home game against Odisha FC on February 23. They could also clinch the Shield earlier if FC Goa goes down against Kerala Blasters the day before.
