Football: BMC clears proposal to turn Neville D'Souza ground to convention centre
Young footballers and sporting enthusiasts in Mumbai had gathered in numbers for a protest last month after the proposal was first revealed to the public.
The BMC cleared the proposal to change the reservation of the Neville D'Souza football ground in Bandra to a convention centre and exhibition centre on Tuesday.
This comes just two months after the civic improvements committee had cleared the proposal to turn the play ground into a convention centre in June.
Young footballers and sporting enthusiasts in Mumbai had gathered in numbers for a protest last month after the proposal was first revealed to the public.
Since then, even the Mumbai Football Association (MFA) had filed an appeal before the Bombay High Court in a bid to save the Neville D'Souza ground.
The high court had asked the BMC to file a reply before 24 August next week.
The BMC cleared the proposal on Tuesday after chairperson of Improvement Committee Sandhya Doshi brought it up in a civic general body, where Mumbai's mayor Ritu Tawde cleared it to turn the ground into a convention and exhibition centre.
The Neville D'Souza ground is one of the few remaining open spaces dedicated to football in the city. It was inaugurated in 2018.
