IBSF World 6Red C'ships 2024: Kamal Chawla wins his maiden World Title
Chawla got the better of Pakistan's Asjad Iqbal to win his maiden individual IBSF World 6Red title.
India's Kamal Chawla clinched his maiden IBSF World 6Red title after a dominating 6-2 victory against Pakistan's Asjad Iqbal in the final of the IBSF World Men 6-Red Snooker Championship on Wednesday.
This was Chawla's second appearance at the final of this event after the 2017 edition, where he won the silver medal.
But this time around, he bettered his performance to bag the gold medal in what was his first major title.
A stellar comeback
The 45-year-old suffered an early jolt when he lost the first two frames of the match to Asjad.
Thereafter, he staged an excellent comeback by winning six consecutive frames to clinch the match.
Earlier, Chawla played out a thrilling semifinal against the German player Richard Wienold where the Indian clinched the victory in a dramatic deciding frame on a black ball where the outcome was uncertain until the final ball was pocketed.
Meanwhile, Malkeet Singh clinched the bronze medal in the same category after losing his semifinal match (0-6) to Asjad Iqbal on Tuesday.
Bronze for defending champion Vidya
In the women's category, India's Vidya Pillai could not defend her title and finished the competition with a bronze medal in the Women's IBSF 6Red Championship in Mongolia.
Pillai had a great run at the tournament but lost a close semi-final match (2-4) against the eventual champion Ng On Yee of Hong Kong, China on Tuesday.
On the other hand, the young 22-year-old Keerthana Pandian also settled for the bronze medal, losing 0-4 to Fong Mei Mei of Hong Kong, China in the semifinal.
