Mohammad Nabi put on a 10-run partnership with his son Mohammad Hassan Eisakhel (Sharjah CBFS T20)

A rare sight was seen at the Sharjah CBFS T20 tournament last week when Afghanistan star all-rounder Mohammad Nabi played in the same match as his 17-year-old son Mohammad Hassan Eisakhel.

The father-son duo played for Bukhatir XI against Brother Gas, even putting on a 10-run partnership, as their team won by 39 runs. It was the senior Nabi who put the finishing touch in the win by effecting a run out off the last ball.

"It was my hope we would play together once — and that we could play together in the national team," Nabi told the 'National'.

"When the father and son played together for Bukhatir XI, it was a proud moment for us since it rarely happens in world cricket. And to lead the side during that moment also felt very good." Bukhatir XI skipper Khalid Shah said.

In the modern era, this is among a handful instances of international cricketers playing in the same match as their sons.

Denis Streak – Heath Streak, 1996

In 1996, Denis Streak returned to First Class cricket after a gap of eleven years to bowl alongside his son as Matabeleland beat Mashonaland Country Districts to win the Lonrho Logan Cup.

Shivnarine Chanderpaul – Tagenarine Chanderpaul, 2017

Shivnarine Chanderpaul and his son played FC cricket for Guyana together. The father-son duo even shared a 256-run partnership in grade cricket.

Darren Sammy - Darren Sammy Junior, 2021

A 37-year-old Darren Sammy played alongside his son in the St Lucia T10 league last year.

Lala Amarnath – Surinder Amarnath, 1963

In India, the most notable instance of a father-son duo playing in the same match was a charity match to raise money for the national defence fund, where 52-year-old Lala Amarnath took the field in his last match with his 15-year-old son.
