Commonwealth Games Day 4: Mirabai Chanu wins gold; silver for Rishikanta, Muthupandi

The men's 4x200m freestyle swimming team made final.

Mirabai Chanu clinched India's first gold of the 2026 Commonwealth Games as weightlifters added three medals to the nation's tally on Sunday in Glasgow.

This was Mirabai’s third straight gold and fourth overall medal at the quadrennial event.

Competing in women's 48kg, Mirabai set a Commonwealth record in the snatch with 85kg before registering a Games record of 105kg in the clean and jerk.

Her total lift of 190kg was a whole 22kg more than the silver medallist.

Earlier in the day, Rishikantha Singh Chanambam opened India's account in weightlifting with a silver in the men's 60kg event.

He lifted a combined total of 264kg, 121kg in the snatch and 143kg in the clean & jerk. His 121kg snatch also set a new national and Commonwealth Games record.

Later in the day, Raja Muthupandi took silver in men's 65kg weightlifting. He lifted a total of 286kg, including 126kg in snatch and 160kg in clean and jerk.

His 160kg clean and jerk attempt briefly held the Commonwealth Games record before it was bettered.d

With one gold and two silver medals from weightlifting, India ended Day 4 on a brighter note.

Preeti, Jadumani advance

In boxing, Preeti Pawar and Jadumani Singh advanced to the quarter-finals and are now a win away from being assured of a medal.

Jadumani beat Pakistan's Sumama Rehman 5-0 to reach the men's 55kg quarterfinals.

Asian Games bronze medallist Preeti Pawar showcased her dominance and stormed into the women's 54kg quarterfinals, defeating Deborah Mtenje after the referee stopped play (RSC).

Men's 4x200m freestyle team reach final

There was a positive update from the swimming pool too as the men’s 4x200m freestyle relay team advanced to the final.

The quartet of Dhakshan Shashikumar, Aneesh Sunil Kumar Gowda, Aryan Nehra, and Srihari Nataraj clocked a time of 7:39.48 to finish sixth overall in the heats.

Bowls disappointment

In bowls, India’s women’s pairs campaign came to a disappointing end as Pinki Singh and Rupa Rani Tirkey lost to England 3-4, 10-3, 1-0 in a tie-break in their final Group B match.

The Indian duo finished third in their group with nine points. They recorded three wins from five matches and failed to advance to the knockout rounds.

Also, Putul Sonowal’s medal hopes in men's singles came crashing down after he lost to Malta’s Shaun James Parnis 10-4, 7-7 in men’s singles.

Others

In gymnastics, Tapan Mohanty finished fifteenth overall in the men's all-around Final. He scored an aggregate of 70.100 points in the final, 1.600 points down from his qualification score.

In the women’s 3x3 wheelchair basketball match, India lost 4-21 to Scotland. They will now play Nigeria in their final Pool B match.
