The chess world has been abuzz this past week with the crowing of the youngest ever world champion in Gukesh D at Singapore last week.

And now, the dates for the much-vaunted showdown between the Indian teenager and the world no. 1 Magnus Carlsen has been finalized.

The two firebrands will meet next year at the Norway Chess tournament at Stavanger between May 26 and June 6, 2025.

2024 has been a stellar year for Gukesh.

He won the Tata Steel Masters, defied odds to win the Candidates Tournament, led India to gold at the Chess Olympiad and then upstaged Ding Liren, the reigning World Champion.

Carlsen had, just last week, heaped praise on the young Indian, calling his victory an ‘incredible achievement.’

“It’s an incredible achievement (by Gukesh), first he was down in the Fide circuit, won the tournament in Chennai (in 2023), then he had an amazing performance in the Candidates tournament,”

Carlsen also believes that the Indian has the potential to become No.1 in the near future.

“It’s a really good thing for him, he has the title now for two years, winning this championship is extremely motivating so there is a very good chance that he is going to go for a great run of results now and probably become the No. 2 player now and maybe No. 1 in the not so distant future.”
