World chess champion Magnus Carlsen will rejoin the World Blitz Chess Championship in New York after FIDE updated its dress code policy.

The change comes days after Carlsen was disqualified from the Rapid event for wearing jeans, which were initially prohibited under the tournament rules.

The five-time world champion faced disqualification and a $200 fine after refusing to switch to formal trousers during the ninth round, as instructed by the chief arbiter Alex Holowczak.

Following this incident, Carlsen had opted out of the Blitz section but reversed his decision after FIDE announced a more flexible dress code.

FIDE President Arkady Dvorkovich explained the revised policy, stating, “While adhering to the official dress code remains a requirement, elegant minor deviations—such as appropriate jeans paired with a jacket—will now be permitted.”

In a statement, FIDE confirmed Carlsen’s participation, noting, “This is great news for the chess world. We are delighted that Magnus Carlsen will defend his title and aim for another crown at this prestigious event.”

Carlsen, who met with FIDE Vice President Viswanathan Anand and key tournament sponsors, expressed optimism about the decision. “After fruitful discussions with FIDE and sponsors, I decided to compete,” Carlsen said in an interview.

Anand remarked that FIDE had not wanted to disqualify Carlsen but was compelled to enforce the initial regulations when he refused to comply.
