Both sides have been quite wasteful with just one shot on target under their respective belts. It was Kromah who gave Churchill Brothers an early lead after Phurba Lachenpa failed to clear his lines convincingly. Mumbai City took their sweet time to create chances as Mehtab Singh ultimately gave the Islanders the equaliser through a well-taken header, as goalie Nora couldn't keep it out, despite getting his gloves to it.

Right at the end of the first 45 minutes, both camps got chances to take the lead, but neither could. Lallianzuala Chhangte was put through on goal by a Vinit Rai pass, as the winger managed to skip past the goalkeeper, but failed to finish the attempt as a defender was able to catch up to him. On the other side, it was Kromah again who decided to go to solo, despite an open Martin Chaves a few metres to his left, but his outside-of-the-boot attempt went off target.
