But in 1986, the men's javelin design was changed to reduce throw distances and improve safety by moving the center of gravity forward by 4 cm and roughening the grip. These modifications made the javelin fly lower and land more steeply. The women's javelin saw similar changes in 1999.

The current world record holder with the new javelin design is Jan Železný with 98.48m
