Assam floods weigh on Lovlina Borgohain ahead of CWG 2026 semifinal

Olympic bronze medallist Lovlina Borgohain has said the devastating floods in her home state of Assam have made it difficult for her to fully concentrate on her campaign at the Commonwealth Games 2026, while urging people to support those affected by the disaster.

The 28-year-old boxer has already secured at least a bronze medal in the women's 75kg event after receiving a direct entry into the semi-finals due to a five-boxer draw.

Speaking in a video message from Glasgow, Lovlina expressed concern over the impact of the floods, which have claimed lives and displaced thousands across the state.

"I am feeling very bad that a lot of people have lost their lives because of the flood in Assam. Many people have lost their homes and everything has been washed away. People are struggling to get food, water, clothes and other necessities," she said.

Boxer appeals for support for flood-hit families

Lovlina admitted that the situation back home has affected her mentally during the Games.

"I am not able to focus properly here because of the condition of my people. I am trying to do my best," she said, while acknowledging the efforts of relief workers, volunteers and the government in reaching affected communities.

The boxer also appealed to people across the country to contribute to relief efforts and help provide essential supplies to those impacted by the floods.

"I request everyone to help us reach out to the people and deliver the necessities to them," she added.

According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), floods have claimed 68 lives in the state so far this year. The disaster has affected 4,45,495 people across six districts, including Sivasagar, Golaghat, Charaideo, Jorhat, Nagaon and Kamrup (Metropolitan).

Lovlina will return to the ring in the women's 75kg semi-finals as she looks to upgrade her assured bronze medal at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
