Guwahati Masters: Tanisha-Ashwini, Sathish Kumar crowned champions

Indian women’s doubles pair of Ashwini Ponnappa and Tanisha Crasto and the third seed Sathish Kumar Karunakaran gave the Indian badminton fans a lot to cheer as they clinched the women's doubles and men's titles at the Guwahati Masters on Sunday.

Ashwini and Tanisha, the only defending champions to retain the title, defeated China’s Li Hua Zhou and Wang Zi Meng (21-18, 21-12) in 43 minutes final, bagging the coveted crown without dropping a single game in the whole tournament.

In the last match of the day, Sathish Kumar added a second Super 100 title to his trophy cabinet with a (21-17, 21-14) victory over Zhu Xuan Chen of China.

The 23-year-old won the Odisha Masters Super 100 crown last year and will now head to Bhubaneshwar high on confidence, seeking to defend his title next week.

Anmol finishes as runners-up

India had a shot at three titles on the final day. However, the youngster Anmol Kharb could not sustain the momentum she gained after winning the first game against Chinese shuttler Cai Yan Yan.

Anmol lost the final in two games but showed brilliant resistance to Cai's attacking shots, eventually losing in a tight three-game (14-21, 21-13, 21-19) encounter in the final.

Cai, returning to the top level after a long break had a rich history against Indian shuttlers which included a couple of fighting wins against Saina Nehwal and PV Sindhu.

India and China finished the tournament with two titles each while the Malaysian combination Chia Weijie and Lwi Sheng Hao clinched the men’s doubles title.
