A day that started with so much enthusiasm and positivity eventually ended with disappointment once again here on the second day of athletics at the Tokyo Olympics.

Sreeshankar Murali had a rather disappointing outing in the men's long jump qualification as he only managed to get the best effort of 7.69m which was never going to be enough to qualify for the finals.

India would be happy with Kamalpreet Kaur's qualification to the finals in what was the only major positive for the day not just in athletics but across all sports.

At the end of the day in the final event, we saw Elaine Thompson-Herah winning the gold and setting a new Olympic record in the process as well in the women's 100m event with a time of 10.61s.

That's all for today and thank you very much for joining us in the coverage.

Many doubted that after the Rio Olympics when she was plagued with injuries, that whether she'll be able to reach the same heights again in Tokyo.

But she's not only defended her title but also managed to break the Olympic record in the process.

ALL OVER FOR SREESHANKAR MURALI :(

WARRIOR MENTALITY FROM TAJAY GAYLE

Tajay Gayle, who a couple of minutes ago looked like he was down and out after injuring his knee, comes back with a heavily strapped left foot and hits the 8.14m mark.

However, he might have further aggravated that injury in the process.
