Gulveer Singh completes historic Commonwealth Games medal double with 5000m bronze

India's long-distance star Gulveer Singh capped off a memorable Commonwealth Games campaign by winning the bronze medal in the men's 5000m, completing a historic medal double in Glasgow.

Gulveer clocked 13:24.95 to finish third behind Kenya's Michael Kiplangat Kipsang (13:23.61) and Australia's Ky Robinson (13:24.70) in a thrilling finish, with just 0.04 seconds separating the Indian from fourth-placed Cornelius Kemboi of Kenya (13:24.99).

Having already scripted history by becoming the first Indian man to win a Commonwealth Games medal in the 10,000m, Gulveer added another chapter to his growing legacy with a podium finish in the shorter distance.

The bronze medal marked Gulveer's second athletics medal of the Games after he had earlier claimed silver in the men's 10,000m with a time of 27:49.78, becoming the first Indian man to finish on the podium in the event at the Commonwealth Games.

The 28-year-old from Sirsa village in Uttar Pradesh's Aligarh district once dreamed only of securing a place in the Indian Army. Today, the Naib Subedar has established himself as India's leading distance runner, collecting medals at every major championship while rewriting the national record books.

Gulveer entered the Glasgow Games in outstanding form, having swept both the 5000m and 10,000m titles at the 2025 Asian Athletics Championships, besides holding the national records in multiple distance events, including the 10,000m.

His latest bronze ensured India finished the athletics programme with yet another medal and further underlined the rapid rise of Indian distance running on the international stage.

For Gulveer, the two-medal haul in Glasgow represents another significant milestone in a career that has steadily broken new ground.

After making history in the 10,000m, he now leaves the Commonwealth Games as one of India's biggest athletics stars, having completed a rare long-distance medal double on one of the sport's biggest stages.
