Commonwealth Games 2026: All you need to know about Selva Prabhu

When Selva Prabhu Thirumaran walks onto the runway at Scotstoun Stadium for the men's triple jump later this month, it will mark his debut at a senior multi-sport Games.

The Tamil Nadu athlete has been one of India's fastest-rising jumpers over the past four years, progressing from junior success to becoming one of the country's leading triple jumpers.

With an indoor national record, NCAA title and a string of impressive performances on the American circuit this season, Selva Prabhu heads to Glasgow as one of India's strongest medal prospects.

Early days

Selva Prabhu announced himself in 2022 by winning gold at the Khelo India Youth Games and the U20 Federation Cup before claiming silver at the World Athletics U20 Championships later that year.

His rapid rise continued in 2023 when, at just 18 years of age, he won gold at the Venizelia-Chania International Meet in Greece with a personal best leap of 16.78m.

The performance earned him the Asian Athletics Association's Best Asian Under-20 Male Athlete of the Year award, making him the first Indian to receive the honour.

Selva Prabhu's progress took him to the Inspire Institute of Sport in Ballari, where he trains under former Cuban Olympian Yoandris Betanzos.

Training alongside national record holders Jeswin Aldrin and Praveen Chithravel has helped accelerate his development. Chithravel will also compete alongside him in Glasgow, giving India two strong contenders in the men's triple jump.

Breakthrough season

The 2026 season has been Selva Prabhu's most consistent yet, with most of his competitions coming on the American collegiate circuit.

He opened the year by winning the Thane Baker Invitational in Manhattan, Kansas, with a jump of 16.49m, comfortably achieving the Athletics Federation of India's qualification standard for the Asian Games.

At the NCAA Indoor Championships in Fayetteville, he produced a leap of 17.05m to set the Indian indoor national record, while also recording a wind-assisted 17.19m during the season.

He followed that with victories at the Stanford Invitational in California and the Oregon Team Invitational at the iconic Hayward Field, where a consistent series of 16.61m, 16.57m and 16.37m secured another title.

Competing in NCAA Division I has provided Selva Prabhu with regular exposure to world-class competition, prompting the Athletics Federation of India to exempt him from its domestic competition requirement, similar to the relaxation granted to Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra.

Eyes on Glasgow

The Commonwealth Games will present a different challenge from the American collegiate circuit.

The men's triple jump field features several established athletes from the Caribbean, Africa and Oceania, making it one of the strongest competitions Selva Prabhu has faced at the senior level.

However, carrying the confidence of an indoor national record and a string of victories in the United States, the 21-year-old heads into his maiden Commonwealth Games looking to translate his rapid rise into a breakthrough performance on one of the biggest stages in international athletics.
