The upcoming month is set to be filled with high octane action as the much-anticipated Men’s World Boxing Championship is slated to kickoff. The 2019 edition will get underway from September 7 to 21 September in Ekaterinburg, Russia as the fans wait with baited breaths to catch their favourite boxer in action.

The Indian men’s boxing contingent put up encouraging displays at the Asian Championships and the India Open this year and will be eager to improve upon their performance from the last World Championships where they won a bronze. This will be the perfect platform to gauge themselves against the world's best before the 2020 Olympic qualifiers begin.

Schedule

The fourteen day big-ticket tournament will see the top men’s boxers across the globe battle it out for the coveted prize. Also with BFI emphasizing that a medal at world championship will further the Olympic cause for the boxers, this edition of the world championship is going to hold more importance.

The draw for the tournament will be held on September 8 which will be followed by an opening ceremony. The first 9 days of the event, September 7-21 will host all the preliminaries with the quarterfinals happening on September 18. The semis and finals will take place on September 20 and 21 respectively after.

Squad

Asian Games 2018 medalist Amit Panghal will spearhead the Indian attack which boasts of the likes of Manish Kaushik who earned his berth after outclassing four-time Asian Championships medallist Shiva Thapa in the trials.

While Amit Panghal (52kg) was directly given a place in the squad for winning a gold at the Asian Championships which was the original criterion for selection, Kavinder Singh Bisht (57kg), Manish Kaushik (63kg), Duryodhan Singh Negi (69kg), Ashish Kumar (75kg), Brijesh Yadav (81kg), Sanjeet (91kg), and Satish Kumar (+91kg) joined him through trials held at NIS Patiala in July.

Categories

There will be a total of eight categories in the fray at the AIBA Men's World Boxing Championship. The categories that will feature are: (48-52kg) flyweight; (52-57kg) featherweight; (57-63kg) lightweight, (63-69kg) welterweight; (69-75kg) middleweight; (75-81kg) light heavyweight; (81-91kg) heavyweight (91+kg) super heavyweight
